WORLD MUSIC WEEKEND BENEFITS WHOLE ORGANIC FARM AND wows the Tribe!!!
Participants at the 3rd annual 3sidedwhole world music celebration weekend were treated to performances that were
“Deader than Dead” according to one gleeful participant. That is positive they emoted they were rocked more by the Lunar Fire Show than the Deads recent concerts at Redrocks. We are not competing, but that is high praise!
Rev opened the musical festivities with an awesome one man band performance that delighted friday night’s arrivers. Followed by the surprise performance by The Legs that Got you Here, a gypsy duo of National and Pedro (replacing Audio Buddha who are no more) the participants were mellowed out and jazzed.
Lil Sumtin sumtin, the trio of Tierro on guitar and lovers Gilly and Lisa on drums created sonic harmonies and visions that were sublime and meditative, and startling. They were a completely new rhythm based fusion act that won everyone over with their musicality. Sound by Mateo, and Maurice was detailed and powerful and pristine. Bravo to the sound guyz! Then Inti blew everyone into blissed out space with their new album material that is over the top, with Precious on lead voice Chris on lead electric guitar joining Gilly, Rodolfo and Teresita to create a whole new style of music, Tribal Punk, edgy and danceable and yet smooth.
Alas, the batteries, contributing the sonic darkness out of which the music reigned, ran out four songs too early but everyone preferred quality rather than quantity!
Saturday there were workshops on earth based batteries by Issac and Middle Eastern Rhthmns by Chris, the new guitarist in Inti. He is a graduate of the Ali Akbar Khan middle east music academy and shared amazing deep knowledge of new rhythms and harmonies that were played with by ace rhythm master Issa , accompanied by Gilly and LIsa and guests. it was the best music the yurt has ever hosted!
Other workshops that happened over the festival were on solar ecology by Arvo with Dr Blue and Ron Lawrence giving elders snippets of wisdom and insanity here and there.
Chance did Ceremony over the site continuously over the course of the weekend with several major ceremonies involving participants. Kudos to Lionfire and Mary shamans from Cortez Co who made the long drive to help energize the shamanic ceremonies during our festival. Lionfire brought a new 9 thousand year old Mongolian Jade Skull to help with the festivities.
Saturday had a wonderful community breakfast of banana pancakes and more and a quiet afternoon, while staff roamed Rio Rancho recharging the batteries at various auto stores. armed with 14 charged marine batteries we opened saturday night with DJs Tone Freshwater and Marisha, who sonically excited us with their innovative and high energy sets. It was Tone’s last mainland performance as he is moving to Maui Hawaii the very next day!
The Aztec Dancers of New Mexico then crated sacred energy and space with their awesome dancing and ceremony in the center of the playa. Wearing colorful traditional finery of feathers and paintings, they mesmerized the wholers with their energy, precision and mastery of time and space with one drum and six dancers.
Totem followed with what one listener called “the best performance of the bands life” They blues/rocked the audience in psychedelic rock grooves reminiscent of the Butterfield Blues Band, early Allman Bros band or ELectric Flag from Easy Rider movie.
THey created an amazing grooves from Issacs original song material filled with soaring space guitar from Lon, a steady bass by Devon and awesome percussion by Cody. They are our official house band (they practice at our house) and were more than worthy of that title.
Lunar Fire then culminated thew weekend with a two hour set of epic proportions, sonic complexity and visual explosions with a trio of fire-dancers that was stupendous.
Akayatay, Teresita and Maqi were like three flowers on fire most of the show joined by the big BURNINGMAN sculpture erupting into flames part way thru the set which burned for the entire rest of the set. Their music was explosive, danceable,p psychedelic and beyond description . People literally danced their asses off (clean up was a bitch) and had expressions of ecstasy on their faces the whole time during their performance. Once again, we used up all our battery power but this time during the very last notes of their last song! A fire-dance with our fire dancers Ben, Jessica, Issac and Katrina combing the the Lunar Fire dancers was a worthy finale.
an acoustic drum and chanting jam then ensued with much band and guest participation which seemed like it went on for hours, leading to a surprise morning set by Raja Ananda from Family Productions on late arriving batteries carried by Jesse in his car. Rajas set was sublime, uplifting, and merged gently with those now sleeping with musical dreams or sitting around the roaring camp fire, seeing afterimages of the music in the fire.Raja just came from opening for Shpongle last weekend in Boulder, CO!
Sunday morning, Cosmic Temple allowed everyone to introduce
themselves, share their experiences
and hopes for the future. THe Tribe felt at One with itself, and
3sidedwholel continued
to be better than ever. Many new guests volunteered for future
service at the Whole
and many new friendships and contacts were made.
